Jacob Zuma New President for South Africa
Cape Town, 26 April 2009 – by Bianca Gubalke
Congratulations: the fourth democratic and peacefully conducted elections in South Africa are over with Jacob Zuma being the new president of our mutually cherished Rainbow Nation – as expected.
A triumphant victory for the ANC – even without attaining the 2/3 majority many had hoped for… and others had feared in view of the power it would have given to change the Constitution unilaterally… a Constitution that in my view is simply brilliantly drafted and just needs to be implemented – fullstop.
“A person is a person through other persons” – African Idiom
Steering a multi-cultural vessel through the prevailing times with huge economic changes taking place all around the planet is no easy task and while a president is one thing – and in my eyes the first servant of his people – a country is about its people… people talking to people… and people are a mosaic of individuals – and it’s up to these indivduals to stand together and build their nation. Napoleon, Gandhi, Mandela – politically speaking, the world has always been moved or shifted by strong personalities – be it for the good or the bad… but they stood on the shoulders of others who remain unnamed, uncelebrated, yet served their purpose in ploughing the way forward and helping great minds and leaders to sprout, grow and take their place in the limelight – to lead, to give, to serve – and yes, to destroy. But they couldn’t have done so alone – if we are in the ‘knowing’ we are all part of the decision, our attitude steers future developments and evolution and we all share the responsibilies.
The elections are over and Jacob Zuma – who has been the most outspoken in his criticism of Robert Mugabe’s autocratic rule that destroyed one of Africa’s most beautiful, highly productive and immensely wealthy countries – a country that supplied food for Africa and Africans: Zimbabwe, says he has no time to lose:
“This is a time to bury uncertainty, pain and tension. We cannot afford to dwell on the negative, we have work to do.”
YEBO – let’s go do it!
