Top Performance in Sports
Winning is the name of the Game
In today’s competitive world it’s all about being the first, the best, the one at the top…
Winning is the name of the Game.
It starts very early, right at home within the family, when getting or not getting that desired sweet or hug is a matter of doing things better than others or at least better than before. No performance, no hug. . . meaning the withdrawal of love and/or attention… and at the end of the day that’s what we all need and desire most, whether we are 4 years old, 30 or 80.
Of course, there are ‘natural talents’ when it comes to Sports… or those youngsters following eagerly in their ambitious parents’ footsteps… often with no easy way out.
Beat the Competition
At school the preparation for the real race starts… and while it’s not everybody’s ambition or cup of tea to have the highest marks or best performance, beating the competition brings prices, honour, laurels, money… and sometimes it’s the only way to get a grant for studies that wouldn’t otherwise be affordable.
Also, if a young talent is spotted it could mean the beginning of a Sports career… and who doesn’t dream of becoming a Tennis star like Federer, a new Tiger Woods or a Dancing Queen?
The question is where does the Dream stop and the Drill start?
Winning is a Mindset
And those who do follow a professional Sports career that promises to produce a new Winner will become the center of extremely focused attention from trainers to sports scientists, psychologists to medical doctors, from special coaches to financial advisors and so on… not to speak of who decides to play which role within the family.
Today we know: Winning is a Mindset… and the budding star (… and potential cashcow) has to be protected from all sorts of dangers, temptations, human weaknesses and distractions with one main objective: to Focus, to Perform and to Win.
And… to Earn.
Maximise High Performance
Of course, the biggest challenge is always oneself… whether we are looking at professional sports or our own comparatively moderate performance when we live our hobbies – cycling for fun, hiking in the mountains, windsurfing, running marathons, or simply jogging or working out in the gym.
It’s always about doing a little bit more, achieving more, becoming better, reaching out for our physical – or mentally imposed – limits.
However, once our own limits are reached it’s a matter of going beyond.
Sports Nutrition
In Competitive Sports that’s not enough. Here there are set measures, top limits that had been achieved and that need to be surpassed… it means going beyond our normal physical capacities – and for this we need more mental and physical strength, more power in our muscles and tendons, an optimized coordination of movements, more stamina, higher concentration levels, higher endurance levels, better recovery times and more. And it differs from individual to individual depending on gender, age, body and general health condition.
It’s now that a professional Sports Dietician brings Sports Nutrition into play and it’s well worth to get the best possible advice as not only will it play a decisive role for the athlete and his or her performance during demanding competitions, but it’s crucial that today’s strict rules concerning Anti-Doping regulations have to not only be clearly understood but also followed… to ensure a medal won remains a medal over time.
Dietary Supplements for Sports
As the market is flooded with Sports Nutrition Supplements it’s not easy and rather tiresome to get through it all and find what’s right – and yes, that’s what a dietician is there for. However, in my view everybody should take the responsibility of being informed and to know the practical dangers, risks and possible ethical consequences … especially as at the end of the day it’s the performer’s own decision.
When considering Dietary Supplements to maximize sports performance one should always check whether…
~ the Claims of these products are scientifically supported and proven?
~ Is the product safe?
~ Does the product contain any banned substances?
~ Could certain ingredients in the product potentially harm my health?
~ Does it sound too good to be true? Or is it a well-packaged gimmick?
~ How expensive is it? Is the Benefit big enough to justify the expense?
The Sports Nutrition Market
The potential health benefits of certain vitamins and minerals are well-known, however, the fact is that many dietary supplements within the highly profitable Sports Nutrition market have not been sufficiently researched to back the products’ claims… so better be wise than sorry!
Make a wise choice in function of your Health; Life is more than a moment of glory!
